Research Focus

The Clinical Course of Low Back Pain

My doctoral research at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam examines the clinical course and management of low back pain in older adults receiving chiropractic care. Through a prospective multi-centre cohort study — the Back Complaints in the Elders — Chiropractic (BACE-C) study — I have led analyses of treatment outcomes, healthcare utilisation, and the costs associated with this highly prevalent and disabling condition in an ageing population.

My work is guided by a commitment to rigorous methodology, equity in healthcare access, and the translation of research findings into clinical practice. I have contributed to the development and validation of outcome measures for older adults with low back pain, examined the role of psychological interventions in fear-avoidant behaviour, and published an individual participant data meta-analysis of spinal manipulative therapy — one of the most comprehensive analyses of its kind.

Across all my research I strive to conduct work that is community-driven, ethically grounded, and aligned with the principles of Two-Eyed Seeing and Indigenous data sovereignty where applicable.
